The development of modern messaging begins well before social platforms. In the early computing age, computers were large, institutional, and difficult to operate. Work was usually handled through queued jobs. People prepared punched cards, submitted jobs and commands, and waited for a printer to return answers. This process was formal, and it left little space for human conversation through machines. Computing was mostly about submission, waiting, and output.

The important break came with interactive multi-user systems around the 1960s. Instead of letting one program dominate a machine, time-sharing allowed multiple people to access the same computer through terminals. If it answers with confidence, it should show citations. If it connects to business systems, it must respect policies. The future will not succeed merely because chat becomes more fluent.
